For 5 weeks, our middle school youth group held a KISS-A-PIG fundraiser. Before and after service, donations could be made into the jar of any staff person; the one that raised the most would be the one to kiss the pig. Much to Shawna's dismay, she collected the most money ($296.99). Overall, we raised nearly $800. Here's a look at the event.

So, Shawna and I - along with friends Rob and Jen - went to see MacGruber ... if you haven't seen it yet ... don't. If you're not familiar, it's based on the MacGuyver-like character from Saturday Night Live. The previews looked funny and the reviews were good -- one critic called it "the best movie since Wayne's World." However, it was over-the-top with gratuitous, unnecessary vulgarity. In my opinion, it overshadowed the comedy. Not worth your time or $9.50.

Today, at 10:20am, I dropped-off Shawna and Alyssa at the airport for their 11:40am flight to see family (Trisha, Scott, Cohen, Lindsi and Eric) in Phoenix. At 3:50pm, they finally boarded their plane. Apparently, their assigned plane was deemed "unsafe" and so another plane had to be flown in ... which took all day. By God's grace, Alyssa [and Shawna] coped "well" with the 4 hour delay.

So, last night, I woke up to Alyssa screaming in her bedroom -- as if she had seen a monster (it's ironic I thought that ... keep reading). I opened the door to find her standing on her bed with her eyes wide open. I immediately ask what was wrong. In between her gasping to catch her breath, I hear: "There's monsters in my room." So, we spent the next 10 minutes walking around her room, inspecting under the bed and in the closet and even behind the bookshelf to ensure there were no monsters around. Satisfied, Alyssa was quick to slip back to sleep before I had even left the room.

I am many things ... I'm a husband, a father, a son, a grandson, a youth pastor, a radio personality, an uncle, a brother-in-law and a fisherman, to name a few. What I have recently learned I am not is fit ... Wii Fit, to be exact. As posted in April, we bought a Wii. Soon after, our friends let us borrow their collection of games and their Wii Fit board. It was not long after inserting the disc into the Wii console that I realized - this was a not a game. Instead, this was a shot of reality. Before you can even consider what activity to do, Wii Fit analyzes your body and gives you a Wii Fit Mii (character) that best respresents your current state. You'll notice I have not posted my Mii character here.

Vacation is going great ... daytime highs have been in the low 70s with sunny skies. Yesterday (Friday), we went to SeaWorld; I'm happy to report there were no Shamu accidents.

Today (Saturday), we traveled north to Disneyland. We started the day by attending a Princess Breakfast hosted by Ariel. Alyssa was beside herself when princess after princess appeared to meet and greet. In all, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan stopped to say hello.

While in Disney's California Adventure, we had a chance to check out the new attraction ... well, new to us ... Toy Story's Midway Mania in 3D (which explains the glasses).

And we're off ... to Portland tonight, flying to San Diego tomorrow, stops in Disneyland, SeaWorld and the San Diego Wild Animal Park and then cruising for 5 days. Whew, I'm already exhaused ... which is my favorite kind of vacation.

Better late than never, the Mengles have officially joined the Wii-volution. While I'm admittingly not a video gamer, there was something about the Wii ... something that called my name ... that woo-ed me. So, we bought a Wii system on Craigslist (we didn't want to paid full price when/if I get bored and stop playing in a month).

For a guy with serious arachnophobia, I impressed myself today by capturing a black widow in our garage. Once safely double-taped inside a set of plastic cups, we were able to see the red hourglass on the abdomen of the Latrodectus hesperus [spider]. Don't let its size fool you ... that spider could have killed me ... really.

Last Friday, we took Toby to the vet to have some lumps on his chest looked at; turns out they are just fat cells (the vet had a more medical way of explaining it). Then, the good news turned to not-so-good news. She showed us a lump on his ankle, right above the paw. Following a preliminary test, it's determined it's cancer. Without more in-depth testing, the vet suspected it is a local cancer (meaning it isn't spread throughout his body). Whew. So, now, Shawna and I are considering the treatment and the timing for Tobes.

Last week, I filled-in for Dave – my former morning show co-host. It’s always fun to be back on the air in morning drive, but jumping out of bed at 3am doesn’t come as naturally anymore. One morning, I brought Alyssa’s doctor doll with me (a gift from Shawna’s best friend, who happens to be in the medical profession). My problem with this doll is ... she sings ... and the songs she sings get firmly planted in one’s head and later in the day, it’s not uncommon you’re humming them. So, I brought the doll in the studio to share with Central Oregon her musical repertoire. It was after the second song, the phone was ringing ...

While my parents were in town for Easter weekend, I saw the opportunity to have Mom [a technological guru] look at all the laptops we’ve been collecting over the years. One by one, I brought a laptop to the dining room table ... then another ... and another. Mom looked at ‘em all ... from my newest to Shawna’s ancient laptop from her college years.

I blogged a week (or so) ago that I recently had the chance to speak at Jewell Elementary during the school’s “Celebrity Readers” day. Well, today, I received an envelope full of thank you cards and letters from the classrooms I visited. It’s been said that kids are color blind to race, and Bailey’s card [below] proves just that. Blond hair, blue eyes and tall ... go figure.

The countdown is on! 4 weeks from today, we leave on vacation! We’re spending 3 days in San Diego (and Disneyland) and then 4-days on a quick cruise to Mexico! My parents are coming with us, so we’re looking forward to time with them, at sea, in San Diego and catching up with our old pal, Mickey!

Since I can remember, weather on Good Friday has always been less than “good.” Usually, it’s cloudy skies and rain, but this morning here in Bend – snow! It’s almost Noon now, and the snow has turned to rain, but the “Winter Storm Warning” continues throughout the weekend. I’m scheduled to host Bend’s largest Easter Egg Hunt tomorrow morning. That will be a new experience – hosting a spring event in my winter jacket and gloves.

As I type, Shawna and Alyssa are headed home from Yakima after a quick 3-day trip. I understand I missed quite an event yesterday – a donkey birth. I am so thankful I got to HEAR about the miracle of life story vs. SEEING it; I know I would passed out on the barn floor.

With Shawna [and Alyssa] out of town, I declared a Guys Night on Wednesday. Rob, Matt, Robert (from our LifeGroup) and myself went to see Matt Damon’s new movie “Green Zone.” It was well done, well acted and not overly political.

On Palm Sunday, the Joymakers Children's Choir performed 2 songs in the church service. Alyssa seemed a bit distracted during the first song -- if she's her father's daughter, she was probably thinking about the cupcakes waiting for the kids following their singing. During the second song, it was less about singing and all about a palm branch. See below ...

Last Friday, I had the day off, so Alyssa declared it "Family Day." We woke up late, Shawna made breakfast and we went to the High Desert Museum to see the animals. On the way home, Shawna drove, as Alyssa had asked me to sit next to her in the backseat. It wasn't long after leaving the museum that I noticed Shawna was becoming increasingly irritated with the driver behind us. She tried all the tricks ... tapping the brakes and adjusting the mirror, but nothing worked. It was this that caused Shawna to blurt out, "Get off my tail!" And it was that which caused Alyssa to calmly and rationally reply, "Mom, cars don't have tails!"

On February 24, I was asked to be a guest reader at Jewell Elementary as part of their Dr. Seuss celebration. I got to speak to two classes about the importance of reading and then had the chance to read my favorite Seuss selection: Oh, The Places You Will Go. A fun fact about this book ... it was given to me by my elementary school when I spoke at their Dr. Seuss celebration over 10 years ago (I had just started at KISS 106.1 in Seattle).

It opened in theaters on November 20, 2009 … we finally saw The Blind Side on March 6, 2010. Better late than never, right? If you’re not familiar, it’s the story of Michael Oher, a homeless teen who became an All-American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of the Tuohy family. While the movie was great, I don’t think we'll be going to another movie until the cost is less than our car payment. Nine dollars for a popcorn and medium drink?

I’m usually not an enthusiastic reader. I’d much rather hear or watch a story than read it. However, two weeks ago, I started reading Same Kind of Different As Me (following many recommendations) and I couldn’t put it down (literally). It’s the true story of a homeless man in virtual slavery, an upscale art dealer and his gutsy wife with a dream for what could be. Our pastor read it, then suggested our congregation read it and now we’re mobilizing to make a difference with the homeless in our community. So, here’s my recommendation – read it; it just may change your life.

It all just happened ... Alyssa took two big steps into “big girl-ness” this weekend. Suddenly, she had a desire to use the toilet ... every time! Next, she wanted to give up her diapers and get some underwear. And then, she informed Shawna last night that she wanted to give her coveted binky to Aberly, our friends’ new baby. “What’s happening to my little girl?” I thought. “She’s growing up,” Shawna replied. “Wait, how did you know what I was thinking?” I countered. “I always know,” replied Shawna.

I just returned home from 3 days in Portland for my first weekend of Convergence (seminary). I was the new guy joining a group of 7 other men (this is their 3rd of the 3-year program). It was a mix of senior pastors, youth pastors and one children’s pastor. The topic was Bible Storying, or how to pick and tell a story from the Bible to help make a point. It was a good experience and I look forward to returning for our next session in April.

It was early September of last year that Shawna and felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit to form a new LifeGroup (small group). So, we pulled a few families together and began to meet on Sunday nights. Then, a few more joined the group. It wasn’t long thereafter that our group became real. In a desire for greater connection, our LifeGroup spent last weekend at the Inn at Otter Crest on the Oregon Coast. It was an outstanding 3 days of real fellowship sharing real life with one another (kid-free, by the way – thanks Mom).

Yesterday, we traveled to Portland to see the Disney LIVE! Rockin’ Road Show. It was great to see Mickey and the gang and the music was fun and upbeat. Last weekend, my brother-in-law (Darren) and family (Bethanie, Nyan and Avery) came to visit for the weekend. So far, every time Nyan, my nephew, comes to Bend, I try and arrange something for he and I. Last time, it was going to a monster truck show with V.I.P. passes. The time before that, we went to Sun Mountain Fun Center. This time, Nyan became a local radio personality. It all began when a limousine arrived at the house. Nyan and I hopped in and we were off to THE PEAK 104.1 studios. Once at the radio station, I put Nyan on the air as my guest co-host. He did great ... so great that I asked if he wanted my job; he answered yes. Then, it was back into the limo for some obligatory waving to passing cars and back home. It's good to know that I'm covered if I ever need a fill-in DJ ... just have to figure out how to get him from Yakima to Bend ... and how to get around the child labor laws.

Following the completion of Alyssa's playroom 4 months ago, there were 3 things still to be done. 1. Room décor ... 2. Banister finishing ... and 3. Window blinds. While we loved the view of the Cascades and Awbrey Butte, we weren't huge fans of the general public being able to see in at night ... nor did our guests sleeping on the sofa bed enjoy the early morning sunrise. SO, we began a search for the perfect blinds. 5 stores later, we found 'em. Last Friday, my brother-in-law and his family arrived in Bend to visit for the weekend. After several drilled holes and ill-placed screws, we got the blinds up. Thanks, Darren.

olive garden ...

After much anticipation, Olive Garden has opened its doors here in Bend. Finally, we have the chance to enjoy the breadsticks, the salad and the Zuppa Toscana whenever we want. As with any new restaurant in Bend, it's quite the affair on opening day/weekend. We must have forgotten this fact. Nevertheless, we waited ... and waited ... and waited ... and finally were seated ... and it was just like we remembered. Is it the best Italian ever? Not hardly, and yet, we'll be assuredly be back.

Last weekend, Shawna and I (along with Alyssa and Toby) took our middle school youth group to Sunriver for a winter retreat. We packed in several activites, including ice skating, which Alyssa was eager to try for the first time. So, we laced up her little ice skates and took to the ice. I'm happy to report ... not one fall.

Well, here it is ... my first blog on the first day of the new decade! I wish I could share some crazy party stories from last night, but fact is - I was asleep at 10pm. Stop laughing. We had some friends over (Colin, Kelsey and baby Aberly) for pizza, games and the Midnight countdown (in New York). Soon after the ball dropped, so did my head ... on my pillow in bed. So, it's January 1, 2010 and for the first time in a long time, I didn't make a resolution. Instead, I have set 2 goals for myself (we'll see if switching resolution with goal will make a difference in my attaining success).

Exercise. I always top my list with this one ... why stop now?
Find My Mom. In 29 years, I've never had a burning desire to find my birth mother. While I know about her, I have always considered my Mom my Mom. Anyway, I am going to start searching for Kimiko Kojo this year. I don't know where or how long this endeavor will take me, but I'm making a commitment to try and find her. I should mention I have my parents full support on this ... I wouldn't do it without.

Today, Shawna and I closed the doors (for now) at Hotel Mengle. 3 weeks ago, we hosted Shawna's parents and our niece, Avery. 2 weeks ago, we hosted my parents and grandmother for Christmas. And this week, we hosted 2 girls from the Matsiko Children's Choir, a Christian-based group comprised of 30 children (mostly orphans) from Uganda. Those chosen get the opportunity to come to America and tour for 6 months - performing in churches, schools and at community events across the United States. It was a blessing to have Sandra and Jane stay with us. Their highlight, they told me, was bowling for the first time.

And while all this company was fun ... Shawna and I have officially decided to hibernate the rest of the weekend.

Well, my first preaching experience is officially in the books ... and I feel confident in saying it went well. God gave me confidence, a clear mind and the words to speak. I spoke on following Jesus, which is easier said than done. I used the text Mark 1:16-20 (when Jesus picked his first disciples) and they, unconditionally and enthusiastically, followed Him. With so many things we can follow today, we must choose to follow Jesus. Following the service, and since in e-mails, I have humbly accepted kind and affirming compliments. I couldn’t be happier that my first sermon was given to my church family. After the service, I learned that Mom was quite paparazzi-like taking pictures throughout the sermon. God is many things ... among them, He's the great provider. Let me explain ... for those of you that weren’t aware, Shawna had a miscarriage a few months ago. At the time, we were consumed with doctor visits, tests and ultrasounds and the eventual miscarrying process. A couple weeks ago, two bills arrived in the mail. The timing was far from ideal. Christmas plans were in motion and while we expected medical costs, we had no idea of the financial repercussions of the miscarriage. These bills were big and unexpected. This morning, Shawna and I received our Christmas "bonuses" from the church (throughout December, members of the church are able to give to a staff gift fund). As I deposited the checks, I had a thought to look at the medical bills still unpaid and in my briefcase. I was blown away ... the deposit I had just made would pay these bills in full with 3 cents leftover. Some would call that coincidence … I give God all the credit. How about that for a Christmas gift?

What a difference a year makes! This time last year, Alyssa was in hysterics at the sight of Santa. This year, as we entered Santa's Village, she could hardly wait to hop up on his lap. We went during the midday, so there was no one in line, which was good since Alyssa and Santa had a lengthy conversation. So, this year’s Santa picture is at right. Last weekend, our church presented our Christmas production, A Manger Story. As the show's director, I had the great pleasure of working with a cast and crew of 40+ volunteers to present a show that told the story of Christmas in a unique way. Of the over 500 people that saw the show over its 3-night run, I had no idea my mom would be one of them. I would come to learn that Shawna and my mom had been working on a secret plan for her to visit Bend to see the play. It was great having her in town and to see the show.

For the first time, I wore shorts on Thanksgiving ... I should mention I was able to do so because we were in Phoenix with Shawna's family for the week. The economic climate has been chipping away at our home value over the last year ... $10,000 at a time. Today, I drove by the entrance to our development to find the above sign updated. Ok, fine. While they aren't giving away the homes on our street, I am certain they are offering "buy one get one free."

I'm honored, humbled and excited about Sunday, December 27, 2009. It will be my preaching debut at First Baptist Church. Since joining the staff full-time, I have had the great opportunity to speak at our church's family camp and to different organizations in town, but this is different. For weeks, my mentor (and Senior Pastor) has been looking for a date to have me "take a swing from the pulpit." With great anticipation, I look forward to the opportunity.

So much has happened since my last posting. Last weekend, we went to Portland to see Disney On Ice. We weren't sure how Alyssa would do (for instance, the show started at bedtime). But our concerns faded away as we entered the Rose Garden to see the stage, lights and curtain adorned with the faces of her friends Simba, Tinkerbell and Ariel. Two hours later, as Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy came back on stage for the finale, Alyssa went from a high (waving and cheering) to a low (shedding some big crocodile tears) as she realized the show was over. Luckily, I had thought ahead and had some perfectly distracting souvenirs ready to go.

On Monday, October 19, my unsuspecting wife would get one final birthday gift - a visit from her sister, Trisha (and her son, Cohen). It was a collective surprise organized by Trisha, my parents and me, which culminated when Shawna came home to find Cohen and Trisha (who live in Phoenix) on our staircase.

I had been nervously anticipating this morning at 10am for months. I had been asked to speak to the men in the Central Oregon Teen Challenge program back in August. Anyone that knows me knows I am no stranger to speaking to groups and at events, but this time was different. 1) It was for a purpose greater than myself and 2) I would be speaking to men with whom I shared nothing in common; I haven't been in jail or had addictions to drugs or alcohol. And yet, as my outline became clearer, I realized I did share something with them ... a love for Jesus. And there it was - my topic. 10am has since come and gone, but what a blessing that 60 minutes was for me. It was in my insecurity that He shined brightest; it was in my nervousness that He calmed me and it was in my lack of preaching experience that He helped form what I would say. I received an email this afternoon from the director of the program saying, "One student said he got more from you today than he has in years." I say, to God be the glory.

Last Thursday, I flew to Seattle (Mom bought us tickets to see Wicked for my birthday). I spent the rest of the weekend catching up with friends and family. On Friday, I had lunch at Daniel's Broiler with my Seattle radio friends followed by a surprisingly quick trip down 405 to see my Grandma and cousin, Gaylynn. On Saturday, Shawna and Alyssa joined me for a special brunch, reuniting the families of my childhood cul-de-sac (see picture). It was so great to see everyone! After one more stop, we headed south for the 6-hour drive back to Bend.

For years, I have been inadvertently lying about my dog's age. I knew he was approaching "the hill," but this weekend, I learned he's not only approached it, but climbed over and is descending down the other side, as well. My parents were in town over the weekend, and Toby the Beagle came up in conversation; how great he is with Alyssa and so on. It was asked, "How old is Toby anyway?" I answered, "He'll be 8 this November." After some quick math, it was determined I was wrong - by a long shot. Turns out Toby will be celebrating his 11th birthday this November. In a matter of minutes, my dog aged 3 years. I suppose if Toby could talk he would have told me his correct age years ago ... that is, if he could hear me.

Every morning, Shawna and Alyssa stand at the playroom window and watch the kids wait for and load onto the school bus. Recently, Alyssa has started wanting to "get on the bus, too." I'm convinced she's going to be quite the scholar ... I mean, at 2 years old and already with a thirst for education! Ok, fine ... maybe she just wants to ride the big, yellow bus.

After months of secret planning, Shawna pulled off quite the surprise for my 29th birthday. It wasn't until we were are the Redmond Airport that I learned Shawna had booked a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Shawna spent most of the flight down explaining how the trip came to be and confessing what fibs had to be told to throw me off. It was an outstanding trip!

So, we're 2 days away from my 29th birthday. For months now, Shawna has been secretly scheming, carefully plotting and squirreling away money for my birthday surprise. Tonight, her plans began to be unveiled, as my father and mother-in-law arrived with suitcases, Shawna asked me to pack for 2 nights and as I type this, she and her mom are whispering just down the hallway. I'm told my birthday starts tomorrow morning. I look forward to seeing what my wife has planned ... seems like everyone knows but me.

On Friday at Noon, Alyssa's new playroom was finally complete ... well, it was an empty playroom. So, that afternoon, my friend (Rob) and I moved everything in to place. This included two large couches, one of which is a sofa bed. I learned later that these pieces of furniture have needed up to 4 guys moving them in the past ... so I felt proud that just Rob and I lifted 'em. Of course, I couldn't move my arms for the rest of the day. Anyway, here's a recap of the playroom project - beginning to end.

Shawna and Alyssa arrived home last night from a quick trip to Yakima to bid farewell to her sister’s family (they’re off to Phoenix) and for an impromptu family reunion. Alyssa had a blast in “Aunt B’s” swimming pool, but the highlight was riding Papa’s new pony – who is especially for the grandkids. Without hesitation, Alyssa was ready to saddle up! Do we have an Asian cowgirl on our hands? Papa would sure like to think so. Click on the picture - I think her face says it all!

The light at the end of the tunnel is shining bright! Right now, carpet is being laid, drop cloths are being pulled up and tape is being removed ... we should have a new playroom tonight! On Tuesday, we took our middle schoolers on an overnighter to Salem. We started by serving dinner at the Union Gospel Mission: Shawna, Alyssa and the girls served at the women's shelter and I took the boys to serve at the men's. Then, it was off to the Enchanted Forest. Alyssa still isn't tall enough for most of the rides, but she had a blast on the Tiny Tune Train (as seen below) and the Mini-Bumper Boats.

It was around 11pm on Saturday night that we returned home from this year's church Family Camp on Crescent Lake. Again this year, my Mom flew down for the event to play with Alyssa while Shawna and I were working and organizing events for camp. Overall, it was a good time. There was no shortage of food and things to do, the weather was decent (a bit on the cooler side), and I left camp with only 2 mosquito bites. My highlight was Friday night when I had the great opportunity to preach to those at camp. It was only 15-minutes long, but I'll remember every minute for a long time. In the moments before I was to begin, I became overwhelmed with emotion. It just all hit me ... God's preparing me for something ... but He's only revealing little parts at a time. After the sermon, Pastor Syd approached Shawna and said, "How do you feel about being a Preacher's wife?"

We returned from camping to find good and bad news regarding our remodeling project. The good news ... on Thursday, we passed both our building and electrical inspections and the drywall was nailed into place. The bad news ... the drywall crew never returned. Not Thursday afternoon, not Friday, not Saturday, not yesterday. So, if in 30 minutes (8am), they aren't at the house, our builder has a back-up crew to finish the drywalling phase.

The new room is taking shape ... yesterday, we came home to find a new floor/ceiling. The framers wrapped up their work last night and this morning, the electrician and heating/cooling guy arrived.

It's Day 2 of our home remodel project ... last night, the team stayed late to stay on track. We came home to a plastic-filled living room and stairway, lots of dust, no TV (except for the master bedroom), no Internet and no A/C. It's a small price to pay for the room being constructed. It's Demo Day at the Mengle house! Somerset Construction arrived at 8am this morning and are preparing to demo the walls in and around the living room. If everything times out perfectly, this time next week, I'll be blogging about our new playroom addition, which will be a giant room (above the living room) with lots of room to play and beautiful views of the mountains.

Last night, we took our middle school group to see a Bend Elks baseball game. It was our first game of the summer, and turns out it'll be the last (regular season ends tonight). Seems like we always make it to just one game a summer, which is fine (if I had to listen to the obnoxious announcer for one more inning, I would kill myself. Ok, slightly dramatic.) Alyssa lasted the entire game - thanks to a bag of M&Ms. Baseball, summertime, family .... and 10 middle schoolers. I call it a perfect night.

At this moment, as I sit at my desk, looking outside at the windy conditions and 60-degree weather, Shawna is sitting poolside in sunny Las Vegas. She flew out of town this morning to meet up with her sisters, one of which is turning 30 this month (hence this Vegas trip). Back here in Bend, it's Alyssa, Toby the Beagle and me. Depending on the weather, and per my trainer, we'll all be hiking tomorrow. I figure I'll just load some Wayne Newton tunes into my iPod and it'll be like I'm in Vegas, too!

Well, it's Day 6 of my 29-Day Challenge and things are going well ... or, they were until last night at dinner. We were dining at one of our favorite restaurants. I ordered a green salad with dressing on the side, grilled chicken, broccoli, wild rice and a water - a meal deserving of a gold star. Then, it happened. Shawna suddenly remembers that my trainer suggested adding fish to my diet. For those of you that don't remember, I hate fish. Well, long story short, grilled salmon is added to my order. As dinner arrives, the chicken and rice are delicious and the broccoli is perfectly steamed. All that's left now is the salmon. As I look at my plate, I can't help but get angry - this stupid, river-swimming, insect-eating fish is about to ruin my dinner. With Shawna rooting me on, I take a bite ... then another. I manage to eat a little more than half of it ... but hating all of it. On the way home, I reminded Shawna that I would keep trying more fish ... at least up until the 29th day of my 29-Day Challenge.

Yesterday morning, we packed up for an overnight trip to Portland, as I had a gift certificate for the Hotel Vintage Plaza. It was a family affair as Toby got to come, too (said hotel is Toby-friendly). On our way, we stopped to do some fishing. Random? Not really. You see, Alyssa has been asking to go fishing ever since Grandpa Mengle got her all excited about the idea during his visit a couple weeks back. Well, thanks to the Trout Fishing Farm, about 45 minutes outside of Portland, Alyssa has officially been fishing. In fact, she reeled in 3 beautiful trout. Since we were headed to a hotel, we gifted our fresh catch to a family arriving at the farm. Then, it was on to Portland. We had an amazing room, delicious dinner and a fun time splashing in our "pool" (a.k.a. an oversized Jacuzzi tub in our bathroom). This morning, Shawna had a hankering for picking some blueberries ... so we found a U-Pick patch just outside Portland. Alyssa and Shawna had a great time picking and eating blueberries (we brought home about 5 lbs.), while Toby and I hung back in the shade. Overall, it was a great trip over and back ...

Not that anyone is counting (besides me), but today marks the one month countdown to my 29th birthday. Not just any birthday, but Shawna tells me this is my golden birthday. Earlier today, Shawna, Alyssa and I found ourselves on the couch watching TV. I'm not sure how we ended up on "Strawberry Shortcake," but we did. For those of you that haven't been so lucky to see a 30-minute episode of said "Shortcake," be thankful. It's painful. I almost found myself wishing to see an episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" instead (and that's saying a lot). Anyway, with about 5 minutes until the end of the show, Strawberry Shortcake and her friends corner the evil sea serpent; victory is in sight. In fear of her life, the sea serpent begs Strawberry for mercy. It's her response that wow-ed me. "Well, I'll forgive you if you promise never to do that again." Serpent agrees, forgiveness abounds, Strawberry breaks out in song and the credits roll. So, what's the big deal, you ask? Well, though it's just a children's show, it occurred to me that we're going to have to undo that lesson when Alyssa starts to understand Jesus' complete forgiveness for our sins: past, present and those we'll do again. If Strawberry is reading this, stick to making tasty desserts and leave the life lessons to us.

This week, we were happy to host my Dad and Grandma for a few days. Much of their time was spent with Alyssa, which included, but was not limited to, singing, dancing, skipping, watching Dora, reading Dora books and playing outside. I'm not sure where she gets it, but when Alyssa gets an audience, get comfortable - it's going to be awhile. Anyway, along with the "Alyssa show," it was great to spend some time with Dad and Grandma. On Thursday night, I drove everyone up to Mt. Bachelor for a ride on the summer lift to the top. It was a beautiful night making for outstanding views with little wind. "GG" (a.k.a. Great Grandma) and Grandpa headed home yesterday morning. Last night, as she always does during bedtime prayer, Shawna asked Alyssa what her favorite part of the day was ... her answer (for the 3rd night in a row) was "playing with Grandpa and GG."

This morning, I gained a new appreciation for my parents ... it was just after the church service that I headed to pick-up Alyssa from her Sunday School class. As I arrived, Alyssa, who had been sitting at the table quietly enjoying her snack, dropped everything to give me a huge smile followed by her blurting, "Hi Daddy!" I got a quick update from the teacher and then headed for the door. "Not so fast" I hear in the background. I turn around to find a stack of coloring sheets and crafts, most of which I needed the teacher's help in interpreting. It was in that moment I realized I had made it full circle ... just 26 years ago, I was the one handing my parents the stack of papers and crafts waiting for their "Oh, wow" and "Did you make that?" comments. So, thanks Mom and Dad for the encouragement and I hope you'll allow me to use some of your lines over the next few years.

Yesterday, our church had a booth at a children's festival in downtown Bend. I spent most of the day in the booth taking photos of kids and families dressed up in wigs and hats we provided. Shawna and Alyssa dropped by around lunchtime and we just had to get in on the fun.

Today at Noon, Shawna and I embark on an adventure new to both of us ... taking 12 middle schoolers to the beach to stay in a beach house for 4 days. My heading makes more sense now, right? Actually, we're really excited about this trip and to see how God uses this time to grow our kids closer to eachother and Him. Yes, Alyssa is coming, too ... as is Shawna's mother (a.k.a. Margaret, Nana and our beach house chef). I'll be returning with the kids on Wednesday, while Shawna and Alyssa will stay at beach through Saturday ... I know what you're thinking and yes, I lost rock, paper, scissors.

It was a beautiful 4th of July in Bend yesterday ... and we celebrated from morning to night! Our day started with front row seats at the Bend Pet Parade. Then, it was off to the Old Fashioned Bend 4th of July Celebration in downtown. Later that afternoon, our "BBF's" (as Shawna called them ... that's "Best Bend Friends," by the way), came over for a BBQ dinner and "pool party" for the kids. Our evening culminated with fireworks in the front yard followed by viewing the fireworks explode atop Pilot Butte.

Grandpa Mengle will be proud to know his granddaughter was cavity free on her first visit to the dentist! Fluoride treatment - no problem. Choosing a new toothbrush to take home - no problem. Watching TV on a screen mounted in the ceiling - no problem. Laying down and seeing a guy with a surgical mask over his face - problem. So, while the experience wasn't without tears, overall, Alyssa did great ... and being cavity free earned her the distinction (seen at right) of a certificate for all to see in the dentist's office.

Last night was interesting … it had been years since Shawna and I had seen a movie (in the theater or at home, unless you count “Dora’s World Adventure”). So, Shawna declared it movie night and picked, “Marley & Me” starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. I knew little about the movie, but agreed. Shawna assured me, “People say it’s a great movie, Bryon.” So, as Shawna put Alyssa to bed, I popped the popcorn and we met on the couch – if I had only known what a blubbering idiot I’d be 2 hours later, I wouldn’t have sat down. For those that haven’t seen the movie, I won’t spoil the plot, but let me just say – if you’re a dog owner, you might want to skip this one. For those that have seen the movie, you’ll understand why Toby was licking the tears (yes, I said tears) off my face as the credits rolled on the screen. The movie also got Toby a free pass to sleep on the bed last night. Overall, a great movie with a great lesson for dog owners … “A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his.” Rent the movie – laugh, cry and love your dog.

Well, all the fun that is VBS finally caught up with our little Alyssa, as evidenced in these pictures taken soon after arriving home yesterday and today. And I thought I was the only one that fell asleep on the couch.

This past Mother's Day, I got Shawna a "Girls Night Out" and last night, she cashed it in. Shawna, along with her friends (left to right) Brandi, Christine and Brittany, received pedicures and facials at a local salon and spa in Bend. I'm told it was a night of laughs, great wine, and delicious cake - all husband and child-less, which was OK with me as I got to watch the Mariners (instead of So You Think You Can Dance) beat the Orioles 4-1.

On Friday morning, I got to check off another "to do" from my "Things To Do Before I Die" list. As part of the annual "Balloons Over Bend" festival, I had the opportunity to go on a hot air balloon ride. It all started at 5:45am when I met my crew and my pilot, Bill Woodhead of Grants Pass, Oregon. I quickly learned this experience was hands-on, as I was put to work to prep our balloon for flight. At 6am, all systems were go and much like the Wizard departed the land of Oz, we were off! The nearly hour-long flight took us from the Les Schwab Amphitheater, over the Old Mill District, downtown Bend and the freeway and over Pilot Butte, where we enjoyed a perfect landing. Alyssa and Mommy had their final swim class tonight ... and check out what our little minnow received at the end of class! Alyssa has yet to let go of her special certificate which indicates her proficiency in "having fun in the water, blowing bubbles like a fish and using her kickers to splash the water." I still haven't mastered those techniques. Anyway, I may be biased, but I think she was the best swimmer out there. Watch out, Michael Phelps!

Memorial Day Weekend, we took an impromptu trip to Portland -- Grandpa and Grandma Mengle drove down from Washington to meet us, too. We swam in our hotel pool, did a little shopping and played at the World Forestry Center. Stop laughing ... it was great ... once. It was great to getaway, even if just for a night.

Thursday night, we decided to embark on an adventure - something we hadn't done since the summer of 2006 ... CAMPING. So, we dusted off our tent, lantern and chairs and set up camp at Tumalo State Park, about 20 minutes from our home (just in case things went horribly wrong). The good news: they didn't. It was a beautiful, warm day, we had the Deschutes River to explore, we enjoyed a delicious BBQ, had a campfire and, of course, Cheetos, one of Alyssa's favorites (see picture). Alyssa loved playing in the tent and snuggling up to Mommy at night, as it was a bit chilly. Overall, it was a great experiment turned experience.

Our daughter, Alyssa, has officially made it big ... in Bend, at least. As detailed below, we bought my Mom a photo shoot with Alyssa for her birthday. Turns out we signed away Alyssa's modeling rights as one of the pics from the shoot is now on the homepage of Kristi Eckberg Photography. Now to keep our little one grounded, we decided against a make-up artist and dressing room, but we did give in on a personal assistant.

Today, I had the great pleasure of a Daddy/Daughter day with Alyssa. Pancake breakfast? Easy. Color-coordinated outfit? No problem. Hairdo? Disaster. I was so grateful for Alyssa's unwavering patience to sit on my lap while I tried over and over to get her ponytails right. So, I missed that course in Daddy 101. It just begs the question: why can't she just wear a hat?

Presenting the inaugural blog posting on the all-new Mengle Family Blogesphere! Here, we plan to keep family, friends (and random strangers) updated on the happenings with Bryon, Shawna, Alyssa and Toby the Beagle. To kick-off our Blogesphere, here's some news ... after working 11 years in the radio industry, today (February 25) I resigned from Horizon Broadcasting Group and accepted a position as Director of Children's Ministries at our church, First Baptist, here in Bend. Along with leading the Middle School program and overseeing the children's department, I will lead and grow our drama ministry, help improve our church communications (i.e. website, newsletter, etc.) and will look for and organize community outreach opportunities. In addition, Shawna also resigned as an Account Manager at Horizon Broadcasting Group today, as she'll be working part-time at the church as the Children's Ministry Coordinator. So, how about that? Both Shawna and I are so excited about this new adventure in our lives and can't wait to see how God uses us!
